Gender Equality and Women’s Rights have Evolved but not as much as
Three waves of feminism and the me-too movement later, you and I would believe that the world has become a better place. But still, there is an evident difference between the workspace opportunities and pay of men and women.
Even today, women in the United States of America are paid ¼ less than what men receive as their payment. While the Third wave debated a person’s ability to open their mind to the fact that male domination does affect the women of our generation, is what we need and the second wave deliberately debated women’s right to equal wages and workspace ethics, the situation remains bad even after half of the century has passed since these waves emerged.
Women as Leaders
You might have seen women in offices quite often than they were at the time your grandparents were employed. Although women are encouraged to apply for jobs, it would still not happen very often to see women in leading positions such as the head manager, CEO, senator, or president.
In fact, if I ask you to name women leaders in politics, you might be able to come up with only 4-5 names, the most famous ones including Kamla Harris and Michael Obama. This is not because you cannot remember the names.
It is solely the fact that women are not often trusted with positions that have this much power that can affect a whole company or a state. They are still stereotyped as emotional and painted as someone who can be prone to take short-sighted and immature decisions.
You would be surprised to know that many surveys even show that many times women do not want to hire women for their company and do not think that someone of the same gender can handle a leadership role. This proves that misogyny is not confined to the male gender only.
To overcome this problem, gender diversity should make an immediate goal at the company and state levels, and hiring criteria should be strictly followed. Also, the already hired women should highlight as leaders more often so that they influence others of their gender.
Half of the Problem Lies in Women feeling Under confident
There are fewer opportunities, yes. But many times, the problem is not the organization, lack of facilities, society, or the state. So many women pass many golden opportunities because they do not think they will be suitable to lead or work in that position even if they have proper training and education.
This problem is more serious than it appears to be because we might be able to resolve and reduce the external factor, but this is something that the women themselves can only rectify. Women’s lack of confidence in their abilities has been sabotaging their careers for years. It takes courage to show up in a board meeting and confidently deliver your ideas, and it takes courage to show up for an interview for a higher position.
The key is never to let opportunities slide away instead, ‘lean in!’ Sometimes faking it helps. If you have women working around you or see any of your female friends doubting themselves encourage and motivate them.
