Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with this question as long as it comes after you’ve asked “How can I help you?” Relationships aren’t like cake, they’re like muscles. If you want your relationships to stay firm, you need to use them or they’ll weaken and atrophy.

The same goes for your network. Those people who you don’t talk to frequently enough will inevitably become bit players in your life. Many professional relationships start with both parties having a very clear idea of what they’re going to get out of the relationship. What you have is the quantity of time together. And, as I often hear and say myself, “It is not about the quantity of time we spend together but rather the quality of our time together that matters.” This is something I learned from my mom in an early stage of my life when I was very prominent in my community. We meet a lot of people in our lives and that’s how we grow as individuals. Sometimes, it’s good to socialize, and sometimes, it’s not. There’s always a time and place for everything.

When I was young, my mom advised me to invest my time in the right way. She said, “don’t look at how much time you spend with people, just how you spend it with them.” When she told me this, I didn’t understand it at the time but now I do.

What does that mean?

She meant that how I spend my time with others matters more than how much time I spend with them.
