Detailed Summary

Happiness is a human construct found in minor things, no matter what state of life we’re in. But too often, we must search for happiness in the big moments that require significant resources. This can lead us to believe there is a direct correlation between our happiness and changes in our circumstances.

Happiness is much more complex. It is both simple and universal, but it doesn’t have an equation that can be proved or an answer that can be learned. You will not find it at the end of a bargain-priced vacation, nor can someone else give it to you as a birthday gift. Happiness is not a destination; it is a journey. There are happy people and unhappy people who share many factors, like the love of a partner, the safety of their community, and their friends. What distinguishes them?

In this book, author Scott Galloway explores the link between how much we work and play and our happiness. He suggests we work hard enough to afford our non-essential pleasures and a little more. The problem is that we want more from these treats, and this endless cycle leaves us unsatisfied and lonely. When we work more, it’s a choice to create more value in our lives. It’s not a necessity to survive. Therefore, if you have the money to buy whatever makes you happy, you’re not obligated to work harder than you already do.

The Algebra of Happiness Summary Key Points

Balance your personal and professional life apart to achieve success

Your job is the engine that will drive your success. But it’s not enough. I’m not saying you shouldn’t focus on your career, but over-investing in it can have its tradeoffs, especially regarding your relationships. If you are a workaholic, or if you find yourself rushing back to the office in the evening after spending time with your family, you have a problem. This goes for your friends, too.

Soldiering on when it comes to your relationship with your children might be putting them at risk. It is lovely to dream big, push yourself, and strive for excellence, but what is it worth without people in your life to enjoy it? The trick is to figure out a way to balance the work-life balance of your young adult years and later adulthood. If you want financial freedom and professional success, you need to be able to balance both your professional and personal life.

Part of achieving this balance is being okay with making some sacrifices today. For example, if you want to own a have multiple children, you will have to delay buying or having those children. You’ll have to work harder now to afford these things later in life.

But our society doesn’t teach young adults how to outcompete others, resulting in many lost potentials. Professional success doesn’t ultimately rest on individual skills; it depends on your ability to sell others your ideas. If you constantly get caught up in interpersonal drama, for example, you’ll never be able to put your best foot forward and nail a big presentation.

Enjoy your hard-earned freedom by reaching financial security

In the world of entrepreneurship, you have to hustle. You must be willing to put in long hours and effort. Often, you have to make sacrifices to meet your goals. And for many people, the goal is to make a lot of money. It’s not necessarily wrong to want a lot of money. And if you do, it’s wrong to work toward getting it — as long as you know what you’re working toward.

I’m not here to tell you that money doesn’t matter. Of course, it does. You can’t live a comfortable lifestyle without some cash, and you can’t give money to causes you care about if you don’t have any in the bank. If we are talking about earning a lot of money — and then donating a lot of it — you have to have the means to do so.

When it comes to money, we have fixed mindsets. We’re either worried about not having enough, or we’re spending with reckless abandon. Reaching financial security enables both of those mindsets to be cast aside. You no longer have to worry about not earning enough. The freedom that lies beyond your paycheck is priceless, so enjoy it. You can enjoy the things you’ve always wanted. You can travel around the world. You can take your family on vacation. You can buy that big house in the suburbs and the flashy car you’ve always wanted. You can take care of your family and never struggle with money again.

Share a deep and meaningful relationship with someone to become happy

One of the essential things in life is to be happy. And one of the easiest ways to be happy is to share a deep and meaningful relationship with someone. We all need someone to love and a way to earn a living. But we also need community and connection to be truly happy. To find the path that will lead you to that beautiful place, you need to know that it exists, so here are seven steps to finding happiness with your partner.

Today, there are many ways to meet potential partners. Apps and online dating services have made it so easy to find a relationship that it’s easy to forget the importance of developing quality relationships. Anyone can swipe right for love, but thriving relationships require a lot of work: you must choose someone with whom you’re compatible, communicate well, and work hard to keep your partner happy.

Involve your loved ones in your choice of partner; they will be able to help you assess whether this person is right for you. Pay attention to the kind of relationship you want: if you want exclusivity, then make sure your partner is on the same page. Being honest with yourself and your partner is the best way to build a strong relationship.
